What is Blepharoplasty?

The eyes are a unique feature of the face that deserves to be visible; however, an abundance of skin around the eyes can produce a tired and unflattering look. Dr. Starkman uses blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) to reduce excess skin and rejuvenate the upper or lower eyelid. Blepharoplasty, whether lower or upper, creates a more awakened appearance and can produce subtle yet striking improvements. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Starkman to learn more about eyelid surgery in Scottsdale.

Ideal candidates for eyelid surgery in Scottsdale

An Upper or lower blepharoplasty in Scottsdale is a cosmetic surgery that is performed on both men and women. At your first visit in our Scottsdale office, treatment alternatives will be explained by Dr. Starkman based on your areas of concern and what you want to address. Generally, ideal candidates have excess, drooping skin and folds that exist on the top eyelid or bloated skin below the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause functional and vision difficulties that can hinder normal, everyday life. For a rejuvenated look, eyelid surgery may be the right surgery for you. If you have hanging skin that folds over on the upper eyelid or bulging bags under the eyes, blepharoplasty can treat this to give you a more youthful appearance.

Eyelid surgery technique

Dr. Starkman performs all of his procedures with General IV Sedation Anesthesia in order for his patients to have quicker recoveries. You may have your blepharoplasty done on the upper eyelid alone, on the bottom eyelid, or on both eyelids.

Upper eyelid surgery

Upper blepharoplasty assists in decreasing the folds of skin that droop over the eye, creating a more awake appearance. During this technique, the incision is usually made along the lid crease to excise loose skin and fatty tissue.

Lower eyelid surgery

Eyelid correction on the lower lid is performed to reduce puffy and bulging skin beneath the lower eyelid. The incision is carefully made along the lash line to allow access to remove tissue and fat, and the skin is subtly lifted to allow for a softer, flatter look. In some cases, a non-surgical laser treatment can be incorporated to assist with discoloration, while fillers can be used for more smoothness and softening.

What Are Some Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

  • Improved vision – Removing excess skin from the upper eyelids can expand your field of vision.
  • Easier makeup application – A smoother upper eyelid surface makes it easier to apply eyeshadow and eyeliner.
  • Reduced fine lines and "crepey" skin – Tightening the eyelid area can minimize signs of aging around the eyes.
  • Less puffiness and under-eye bags – Surgery can help reduce the appearance of swollen or tired-looking eyes.
  • Brighter, more youthful eyes – By addressing sagging and dark circles, your eyes can appear fuller and more refreshed, often without the need for makeup.

What to expect during eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery in Scottsdale can last up to two hours, depending upon whether one or both eyes are treated. After this outpatient surgery, you should plan on a week to recover and rest at home. A cold compress can help reduce discomfort, swelling, and bruising. The results from eyelid surgery can last for years, but the aging process does not stop. Over time, other non-surgical cosmetic treatments can be great additions to your surgery to maintain your surgical outcomes.

Complementary Procedures to Enhance Eyelid Surgery

To achieve the most natural and balanced results, eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial procedures. A brow lift may be recommended for patients with drooping eyebrows, helping to open and lift the entire upper face. For more comprehensive rejuvenation, lower facelift surgery can be performed alongside blepharoplasty to smooth and tighten the lower face and neck. Minimally invasive treatments such as fat transfer or laser skin resurfacing can further refine results by restoring lost volume and improving skin texture for a refreshed, youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty FAQs:

How much does eyelid surgery cost?

Blepharoplasty costs can vary, depending on whether you are having an upper eyelid lift, lower, or both. When your treatment plan has been decided during your consultation, Dr. Starkman can go over estimated costs. To get natural-looking results that last for years to come, it is better to focus on choosing a skilled doctor you trust, like Dr. Starkman, instead of trying to find the cheapest place. During your consultation, Dr. Starkman will cover the cost of your specific procedure, along with our financing options.

Can I use insurance to pay for my eyelid surgery?

If hanging skin is affecting your vision, your insurance may cover part of your eyelid lift. Please tell Dr. Starkman during your consultation if you are considering using your insurance. One of our administrative staff will help you get the needed information and paperwork for your insurance company to process your claim. Generally, you will need a diagnosis from an optometrist or ophthalmologist, stating an eyelid lift will improve your vision.

Will eyelid surgery change the shape of my eyes?

Eyelid surgery can subtly enhance the natural contours of your eyes, but it’s not designed to change their fundamental shape. However, in cases of significant sagging or hooding, the eyes may appear more open or youthful post-surgery.

Can I wear contact lenses after eyelid surgery?

Most patients can resume wearing contact lenses about 1–2 weeks after surgery, once swelling subsides. Glasses are often recommended in the interim. Always follow your surgeon's post-op guidance.

Will eyelid surgery fix wrinkles and crow's feet?

Wrinkles on your forehead and the corners of your eyes (crow's feet) may be better corrected with a facelift or brow lift; the results of the eyelid surgery are confined to the eyelids only. Eyelid surgery can be combined with a non-surgical procedure, such as BOTOX, which combats wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler can also be effective because it adds volume to hollow areas for a smoother appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Starkman will create your personal treatment plan based on your goals.

What about non-surgical treatments instead of eye surgery?

Noninvasive skin tightening procedures and injectable treatments (for example, BOTOX, Juvéderm, and Restylane) can provide some improvements. However, if you have moderate to severe sagging skin or want long-lasting results, an eyelid lift would be better than a nonsurgical treatment. After you have talked to Dr. Starkman about your concerns and goals for your eyes, he can explain his recommendations for your nonsurgical or surgical treatment plan. He may also suggest combining surgical and non-surgical procedures to produce the best results.
