About rhinoplasty

A Rhinoplasty in Scottsdale is an aesthetic surgery performed to change the look of the nose. Rhinoplasty can also help repair a functional or breathing issue in some patients. Although rhinoplasty consists of subtle changes, the results can be quite dramatic. The surgical techniques for rhinoplasty surgery are among the most complex and detailed out of all facial and neck procedures. For best results, it is important to find a Facial Plastic Surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty procedures.

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty

Adults and teenagers over 16 years of age can be candidates for rhinoplasty. Facial growth and maturity must also be complete, and this will be addressed during your consultation, especially for adolescents. If you find yourself frustrated with the appearance of your nose and have distinct issues you hope to improve, enhance, or correct, this procedure may be the right course of action. It is important that realistic expectations are discussed as your nose and facial profile will be changed.

Benefits of rhinoplasty surgery

A rhinoplasty is performed for a variety of cosmetic as well as functional concerns. The procedure can address imperfections in the nasal bridge, tip, and nostrils. It can reduce a prominent dorsal hump, reshape a bulbous or drooping tip, and refine the nostrils for a more inviting and balanced profile.

Rhinoplasty can:

  • Improve facial symmetry and balance
  • Create a nose that is more harmonious with the rest of the features
  • Refocus the gaze on the eyes and the smile
  • Remove bumps, depressions, and other irregularities
  • Enhance breathing and optimize airflow
  • Elevate quality of life
  • Increase self-confidence and self-image

Types of Rhinoplasty

Primary Rhinoplasty

Primary rhinoplasty refers to the original (or first-time) rhinoplasty. As rhinoplasty is a complex and detailed procedure with every patient having unique anatomy, the best opportunity for perfect results is during primary rhinoplasty. In subsequent (or revision) rhinoplasty surgery, the scar tissue and work done during previous surgery significantly complicates the procedure. When selecting a surgeon for your primary rhinoplasty, it is very important to find a rhinoplasty specialist to minimize the risk of poor results that may require revision rhinoplasty in the future.

Revision Rhinoplasty

A revision rhinoplasty is when surgery is performed to correct subpar results from prior rhinoplasty. This procedure is significantly more complex due to several reasons. The unique anatomy of every patient’s nose is now distorted by scar tissue and surgical manipulation from the prior procedure. Additionally, additional support grafts are usually required to stabilize the nose following this revision. Cartilage material from support grafts can be taken from the ear (conchal grafts) or from the rib (chondral grafts). Dr. Starkman specializes in revision rhinoplasty surgery and is one of the only rhinoplasty specialists in Arizona who performs rib cartilage grafting for major revision rhinoplasty cases.

FAQ

How do I choose the right rhinoplasty surgeon?

Choosing your rhinoplasty surgeon is the first and most important step to achieving your desired outcome. Rhinoplasty specialization requires training, experience, skill, and certification. Many plastic surgeons perform the occasional rhinoplasty surgery in addition to other abdomen, breast, extremity, and face procedures. To ensure adequate expertise, it is important to find a Facial Plastic Surgeon who performs surgery exclusively on the face and neck, and further specializes in rhinoplasty surgery. Your rhinoplasty surgeon should have performed at least hundreds, if not thousands, of rhinoplasty procedures. Also, you should be able to see some of the surgeon’s results via their patient gallery and online reviews.

What are the risks with rhinoplasty?

Risks associated with rhinoplasty surgery include breathing difficulty, infection, scarring, nosebleeds, septal perforation, asymmetry, or poor cosmetic results. Always make sure to find a board-certified surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty to minimize the risk of poor outcomes.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?

While cosmetic rhinoplasty is not covered by insurance, medically necessary nose reshaping to improve your breathing may be partially covered by insurance. If you are considering using your insurance, please tell Dr. Starkman during your consultation. Our office will help you submit the needed paperwork and information to your insurance to process your claim.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on improving the nose while still maintaining your cultural identity. This may be a consideration if you are Asian, African-American, or Middle Eastern. During your consultation with Dr. Starkman, you can discuss what you like about your nose and what you would like to change. This will allow him to customize your treatment plan so you get your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?

Many patients consider combining nose surgery with another procedure, like chin or cheek augmentation. Combining surgeries for a dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Starkman. Once he understands your goals, he can help you decide which procedures should be included in your treatment plan.
