About Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is a highly sought-after treatment that improves the look of the jawline and chin. For men and women who have recessive chins, chin augmentation can be a life-changing procedure. Many times, when a chin lacks shape and size, it can create an unappealing profile; however, a number of techniques can be performed to highlight the chin. One of the most common procedures is inserting a silicone implant into the chin area to construct a stronger jawline and a more defined profile. Chin implants are available in various sizes and shapes to address each patient's specific needs. Board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Sidney Starkman is a facial plastic surgeon who exclusively performs facial reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery so you can rest assured your chin augmentation will be proportional and natural looking.

Beyond implants, nonsurgical augmentations, such as Radiesse injections or Kybella, can be used to reshape the chin and contour the jawline. Read further to learn about these supplemental procedures.

Ideal Candidates

Chin enhancement (augmentation) is an aesthetic elective surgery for both women and men. If you are self-conscious because of the size and shape of your chin and dislike the weak profile it creates, this cosmetic enhancement can redefine the lower area of your face and neck. It is also common for some of our patients to get a rhinoplasty when they have their chin augmentation treatment. This blend of enhancements is sometimes recommended to ensure the most balanced proportions for your facial features.

Jawline Contouring

Dr. Starkman performs many nonsurgical treatments at Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery. One of the most popular of these treatments is jawline contouring using Radiesse, an FDA-approved dermal injection that enhances volume in certain areas of the face. By skillfully and strategically injecting your jawline with the necessary amounts of Radiesse, Dr. Starkman can dramatically enhance the look of your jawline. Jawline contouring can also be enhanced with the use of Kybella, which is an injection that can reduce small pockets of fat right under the chin. You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Starkman for jawline contouring alone, or you can ask about it as a supplemental treatment during your consultation for chin augmentation.

Surgical Technique

During chin augmentation, an incision is carefully made just under your chin. Through this incision, a pocket is made to secure the implant in place, which includes removing and shaving some of the bone and cartilage to make grooves to hold the implant in position. The implant is inserted through the incision and positioned over the bone, directly below your bottom lip. In some cases, the incision can also be made inside the crease in the lower lip where it meets your gumline. Both types of incision help to hide scars. Thin stitches are then used to connect and close the incisions, and your chin will be wrapped with medical garments.

What to Expect

Chin enhancement surgery creates immediate visible outcomes, which is usually very delightful for our clients. Although redness, swelling, and bruising will occur after your surgery, this only lasts a short while. For many, chin augmentation takes roughly 1 – 3 weeks of recovery. Heavy exercise should be avoided while in this recovery window. Chin augmentation surgery has historically high success rates, and in the hands of a facial surgery specialist, like Dr. Starkman, your outcome will look proportionate and refined.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does chin augmentation cost?
Dr. Starkman will be able to start estimating your total cost for a chin implant in your consultation once your treatment plan is created. Your costs will depend on the type and size of implant you choose, as well as if you are having any other procedures done. It's always important to focus more on choosing a plastic surgeon with experience and proven results, like Dr. Starkman, instead of shopping for the lowest price. Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery accepts many payment methods, and we can help you find low-interest financing that will make your surgery more affordable.

Will augmentation fix my double chin?
Surgical chin augmentation is designed to offer a sharper, stronger look to the jawline. If you want to correct a double chin, you may be a better candidate for a liposuction procedure, where the fat in your upper neck below the jawline (the submental area) is corrected. Sometimes this technique alone can create a new profile and look without chin augmentation surgery. Dr. Starkman will go over your options and his recommendations during your consultation.

Can I combine other facial surgeries with chin augmentation?
Some patients combine chin augmentation with other facial surgeries, like cheek augmentation or rhinoplasty. You may also benefit from nonsurgical jawline recontouring. It can be difficult to tell on your own what procedure or procedures will be the most beneficial, which is why your consultation with Dr. Starkman is important. He can use his years of experience to help you create your custom plan.

Are there nonsurgical procedures to improve my chin?
To correct excess fat in your neck that's creating a double chin, Kybella injections are a minimally invasive treatment that could help. Kybella is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce fat in the submental area. This may be enough on its own, or Kybella may be combined with chin augmentation for your best results. Talk to Dr. Starkman during your consultation so he can review your options and decide what is best to fit your goals.

How does a chin implant affect shaving for men?
It does not significantly affect shaving. While you are still wearing your surgical dressings on the incision, you will need to shave around them. Once Dr. Starkman says it is okay to remove the dressings, you should be able to tell if your incision is healed enough to shave over. However, you may need to wait a few more days. When you do shave again, just make sure not to place extra pressure on the implant and the muscles that lie over it. When you are fully healed, you should be able to shave as normal.
