If you are bothered by how your skin looks because of sun damage, dark spots, or other blemishes, you could benefit from a Candela GentleMax Pro photofacial treatment. A photofacial is a treatment that can significantly yet subtly rejuvenate the skin for adults with multiple types of complexion problems on their face and neck. The Candela photofacial is not considered an invasive procedure, but it can be very effective and produce amazing results. Intense dual wavelengths of light warm the skin from deep within the tissue, just enough to set off the natural regeneration process and boost collagen production. As this added nutrient takes effect, you should see a healthier skin layer with a more even tone, added firmness, and decreased spots of pigmentation. Unlike many other photofacial technologies, the Candela photofacial is safe for all skin types and tones.

"I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Starkman and his staff, as well as the ambience of the entire place. The lobby was so welcoming and sparkling clean, with drinks and treats available for customers. Dr. Starkman personally injected my Botox for my 11 lines and was very kind and patient in explaining what he was going to do, not only before the injections but during as well. He and nurse Bailey were just amazing. I’ve had Botox a few other times, at other places, and never had the extremely pleasant experience I had at Starkman. I’ll definitely be going back for my maintenance and I highly recommend them to anyone for the services they provide. You’ll be in good hands!"- R.T. / Google / Feb 15, 2020
"I have always wanted a Rhinoplasty; spent a great deal of time doing my research on who I should let work on my face! As soon as I had a consultation with Dr. Starkman, I knew. It's him! He has such a calming presence about him and he works very methodically. He spent time with me, answered ALL of my questions and educated me about the whole process from start to finish. Dr. Starkman and his wonderful staff have exceeded my expectations! From the moment you step into this gorgeous office, you already know that "attention to detail" is the focal point. It can be scary trusting someone with your face, but all of my fear was replaced with trust, excitement, and gratitude. I'm about 3 weeks post-opp, and I am so surprised with how fast and easy the healing process has been. The best part? I still look like myself! Dr. Starkman created the nose I've always wanted and kept the face I've always had! Hands down, Dr. Starkman does brilliant work. He extends himself to his patients, he's a phone call away and he is always willing to answer any question or concern.I am so happy I made the choice to finally get this done, I'm so glad that Dr. Starkman was the one to do it! If you've been browsing around for a trustworthy, patient, and precise surgeon, look no further."- C.F. / Google / Jan 25, 2020

A photofacial works deep within the layers of your skin to treat many complexion blemishes (especially sun spots and brown lesions) with little or no recovery needed. Ideal candidates for a Candela photofacial may have several problems with their skin, including sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation (brown spots), rough texture, large pores, flushing, freckles, age and sun spots, spider veins, and slight loss of elasticity. Dr. Starkman or our medical aesthetician will assess your skin to see if you are a candidate for a Candela photofacial during your private consultation.
Photofacial procedures are done in one of the minor procedures rooms in our Scottsdale, AZ office in about 20 – 30 minutes. To start the procedure, the aesthetician will clean and dry your skin before covering your eyes with shields. The photofacial is administered using a handheld device that is passed over the skin while emitting pulses of laser light. While most patients will feel some discomfort during the photofacial, it is generally tolerable for the quick treatment time.
What to Expect
There is no recovery period associated with a photofacial, but you will leave your appointment with your skin a little pink and swollen. This will go away on its own in about a day — it can be concealed with makeup if you want. Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery recommends that patients use an ointment on their skin to decrease irritation and speed healing. It also helps to take an anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce swelling. After several days, the irregularities that rested under your skin will come to the surface and then begin to flake off. It's very important to keep your skin protected from the sun at all times after a photofacial and not pick at your skin while it heals. While you should see visible results after the first session, your skin will attain the best results after several photofacial sessions. Dr. Starkman recommends approximately 3 – 6 treatments scheduled about once a month at Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a photofacial cost?
Your skin is unique, which means the cost of your photofacial treatment will vary based on your unique goals. Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery accepts several payment methods. During your initial visit, we can help estimate your cost and determine the number of treatments needed to fit your needs, goals, and budget.
How quick are the results from a photofacial?
Visible improvements can usually be seen after one photofacial, but final results develop around one month after your last treatment. It’s common for patients to see different types of results and skin responses following each session. You should notice the fading of redness, blotchiness, and spots (age, brown, and sun) over time.
What are the possible side effects of a photofacial?
It's common to experience mild side effects, like temporary swelling, redness, crusting, bruising, or superficial blisters. These go away on their own 2 – 3 days following your treatment. You will be sun sensitive, and you should keep in mind that excessive sun exposure will negatively affect the results of the procedure. We also recommend using sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent damage, like redness and spots.
Do I need to prep for a photofacial?
To prepare for a photofacial treatment, patients are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the appointment. You might need to discontinue the use of certain medications and topical creams, like Retin-A, several days before each procedure. You may also want to start taking ibuprofen or aspirin for 5 – 7 days before the appointment to reduce inflammation, which lowers your chance of bruising. You should also use sun protection (like a hat and sunscreen).
Why should I get multiple photofacial sessions?
We recommend getting a series of photofacial treatments to produce natural-looking improvements to the appearance of your skin. Each session helps to reduce surface irregularities and spots. Undergoing several sessions also helps produce longer-lasting results.
