A septoplasty, or deviated septum surgery, is performed to repair a septum that is deviated or crooked. There are many different causes of a deviated septum, including genetics, trauma or injury (like a broken nose), or a birth defect. Patients who undergo septoplasty are typically able to breathe more easily, and often, they stop snoring as well. At Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery, Dr. Starkman performs this surgery for patients who are diagnosed with a deviated septum that is obstructing their airway. A septoplasty is sometimes also done in conjunction with turbinate reduction surgery, which addresses proper nasal air flow. Septoplasty is also sometimes combined with rhinoplasty to address cosmetic nasal issues. Board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Starkman specializes in advanced rhinoplasty techniques and is highly trained to treat the nose to restore full functionality and create an aesthetically appealing look. If you have been diagnosed with a deviated septum and are experiencing unpleasant symptoms, contact our facility in Scottsdale, AZ today to schedule an appointment.
"I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Starkman and his staff, as well as the ambience of the entire place. The lobby was so welcoming and sparkling clean, with drinks and treats available for customers. Dr. Starkman personally injected my Botox for my 11 lines and was very kind and patient in explaining what he was going to do, not only before the injections but during as well. He and nurse Bailey were just amazing. I’ve had Botox a few other times, at other places, and never had the extremely pleasant experience I had at Starkman. I’ll definitely be going back for my maintenance and I highly recommend them to anyone for the services they provide. You’ll be in good hands!"- R.T. / Google / Feb 15, 2020

If you have been diagnosed with a deviated or crooked septum, you are likely an ideal candidate for septoplasty. Your septum may have been damaged in an injury, or you may have been born with your specific issue. Many candidates experience uncomfortable symptoms, like snoring, frequent nosebleeds, breathing issues, and even loss of their sense of smell. Also, if combined with a rhinoplasty, a septoplasty could also slightly straighten the appearance of a crooked nose caused by a septum problem. An abnormal septum can cause many problems with nasal functionality, and a septoplasty offers many patients a long-term solution.
At Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery, a septoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under twilight sedation. External incisions are not typically required as the procedure involves lifting and separating the tissue that covers the septum. After lifting this tissue, Dr. Starkman will be able to observe your nasal structures to gently and precisely reshape the damaged areas. A septoplasty typically lasts about 1 – 2 hours. However, septoplasties are commonly combined with other procedures, which may lengthen the duration of the surgery. When Dr. Starkman has finalized the reshaping of your nasal structures, he will stitch up your internal incisions.
What to Expect
Most septoplasty patients will have some slight pain, swelling, and bruising after their surgery. Dr. Starkman typically recommends waiting about a week before returning to your usual day-to-day activities, and you should avoid extensive exercise, including contact sports. Dr. Starkman will follow your healing progress and let you know when you are released to resume these activities. When your swelling subsides, you will be able to feel the full effect of your improved breathing, and your results will continually improve over the next few months.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a septoplasty procedure cost?
Septoplasty costs vary for each patient according to the level of septum damage and whether any other procedures are performed. If your septoplasty has been deemed medically necessary, it may be partially covered by insurance. Let Dr. Starkman know at your consultation if you plan to submit an insurance claim. Starkman Facial Plastic & Laser Surgery also offers many payment options and can help you find low-interest financing.
What is the difference between a septoplasty and a rhinoplasty?
A septoplasty will not change the external appearance of the nose or straighten the look of a crooked nose by itself. A septoplasty is a functional procedure only; it is done to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of a deviated or crooked septum. However, a rhinoplasty is exclusively a cosmetic surgery. In other words, it is done to alter the appearance of the nose. It can be performed in combination with a septoplasty to improve the appearance of the nose at the same time you have your septum repaired.
Is a plastic surgeon better than an ENT for a septoplasty?
An ENT will only be able to focus on the functional aspect of your septoplasty. He or she will not be able to address the look or shape of your nose. However, a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty can perform a septoplasty, as well as a rhinoplasty, providing you both functional and aesthetic results. If your deviated septum has negatively affected the appearance of your nose, a plastic surgeon can better address all of your issues.
Do I need surgery for a deviated septum?
A seriously deviated or crooked septum can cause breathing problems, sinusitis, snoring, and other uncomfortable issues. Unfortunately, these problems will not be able to resolve themselves or go away on their own because the cause, the damaged septum, is still present. A septoplasty is the only way to correct a deviated septum so if you have one or both nostrils blocked, surgery may be recommended.
How long is the recovery time following a septoplasty?
Septoplasty patients typically take around three weeks to heal, though it will take a bit longer to be able to feel your full results. Though your incisions and most bruising will be healed, the full improvements, for example, to your breathing, won't be felt until the swelling is completely gone. Also, if your septoplasty is done in conjunction with a rhinoplasty, your recovery time will be longer.
